LET there be no doubt: Sneaks, known to friends and family as Eva Moolchan, is COOL.
Last year’s Highway Hypnosis album for Merge wended through seductive, deconstructed electro; leftfield, whispered lofi soul with an eerie undertow; almost nursery-rhyme incantations, stripped back grooves. I mean, she wears yellow Cons too. This a woman you can trust to take you to new and deep and deliciously weird aural places.
And she’s announced a new album, Happy Birthday, which Durham, North Carolina’s Merge will be sending forth unto your auditory cortices come August 21st.
She’s teasing Happy Birthday with a little amuse-bouche in the form of the playful, lofi post-rave of “Mars In Virgo”, in which epic dancefloor pulses get it on with the lexical spirit of Tom Tom Club’s “Wordy Rapping Hood” and still manage to clock in at under two minutes.
“I’ve changed a lot now I’m all grown and / I got to grow up some more / I have changed now I’m all grown up / Now I have to grow up some more.” she intones, marking her latest set as just a step in the journey, the musical development; hey, click play below.
On Happy Birthday, Eva notches up the energy; astrological assertions rub alongside poetics filtered through a riot grrl spirit, all pushing out on big bass and beats.
You can order you copy of Happy Birthday here, on CD or traditional black vinyl; oh, Rough Trade are also taking orders for their exclusive opaque yellow vinyl edition.
