If ever the enigma and dynamism of Ron S Peno was evident, it is in the latest video for the Ron S Peno and the Superstitions track ‘The Strangest Feeling’. I almost feel transported back to the days of the Mosman Hotel watching Died Pretty in all their dark glory where Peno prowled like a caged panther across the stage. Peno has a magnetic and compelling performance style that is immersive and expressive, and it positively shines through in the new video.
The video is exclusively a performance piece by Peno backlit by a window with a purple hue and psychedelic twists. You just cannot tear your eyes away from the performance: transfixing and mesmerising. Peno is lost in the delivery: his body writhing and twisting, his hands dancing like butterflies, eyes closed and lost in the magnificent sounds.
‘The Strangest Feeling’ has Peno’s voice at its falsetto best – pure and ringing like a bell. Backed by muted guitars, swirling organ and tinkling piano, his voice is up front and exposed – subtle and delicate voicing with soul-inflected backing vocals. There is sonically a lighter feel, even as the song builds gracefully up a head of steam to its denouement and Peno’s voice assumes a greater steel.

The track is from the recent album ‘Do The Understanding’ – a beautiful and mesmerising album, filled with a heart-rending purity of expression and an acerbic, gritty edge. It is an affirmation of the power and clarity of indie rock and feels like a warm and natural development from Peno’s past. Indelible melodies, distinctive vocals and a songwriting craft combine to produce some quite magnificent. You can get it though all the usual download/streaming sites or though the link below:
