Ahead of his dates with Kamasi Washington at the end of the month, and following on from the announcement of his biggest show to date at Heaven in London on November 19th, Oscar Jerome has revealed a new video for his latest single ‘Misty Head / Sunny Street’.
It’s at it’s heart an R&B song, or at least has all the elements on it, but it’s not a straight road for the song, as its knocked off course continually by this wonky jazz that spills over the beats and the arrangement, and the funk stylings that at least try and kick it back on track. What you’re left with is woozy guitars and synths, over this altering beat with Jerome’s vocals like having honey poured over you.
The video was made in collaboration with director Sam Rigal and Oscar’s brother Alfie Laurence, aka Moth, a drag and performance artist. His androgynous look, and his desire to subvert notions of gender and beauty by using that look, lie at the route of the video. As Oscar explains: “The main reason for starring Moth was out of appreciation for his artistry and a desire to help people see what a creative, multifaceted art-form drag can be. I hope we can challenge perceptions of artistic self-expression and gender expression and hopefully open some people’s eyes, as my brother has done for me.”
Tickets for the London show are available here.
