Jasamine White-Gluz in her No Joy guise has announced a first fill-length album in 5 years, Motherhood, is to be released on August 21st via Joyful Noise, and she’s heralded the return with a single ‘Birthmark’ along with its video, available for streaming right now.
Of the track, Jasamine says “In the studio I wanted to keep the energy fun, and throw any ideas at the wall. We ended up watching the video for ‘Puff Puff Give’ by Hannah’s Field, pulled out some bongos and a broken clarinet, drank 12 bottles of sake, and did group chants.”
Birthmark is an ethereal slice of perfect (indie/electro) pop, with Jasamine’s vocal sitting pretty over synths lines that bleed into each other and scattered beats scattered liberally over things. As it winds into a psych pop haze, so the killer chorus comes in and takes over.
The video, directed by Jordan “Dr Cool” Minkoff and starring White-Gluz, dancer Diavion Nicolas, and a goat named Piquette, was created while in quarantine. White-Gluz explains, “I filmed myself at home and asked my very talented friend Jordan to help build a world around the footage. Diavion has been dancing to No Joy on his Instagram and I am a huge fan, so I reached out and asked him to choreograph a routine for Birthmark.”
