NILS FRAHM has released the video for a glorious live version of his track “Fundamental Values”, taken from his new album, Tripping with Nils Frahm, which is out right now on Erased Tapes.
Nils kicked off a world tour in promotion of his All Melody album at Funkhaus Berlin in January 2018 that was to last two years, span 18 performances, including such venues as the Sydney Opera House, LA’s Disney Hall, and London’s Barbican.
But home is where the heart is; and Berlin is where Nils has his studio, where All Melody was recorded.
He returned to Berlin in December that yeaar for four more sold-out shows. This time director Benoit Toulemonde captured the concerts on film, using only using handheld cameras. Thus the live album Tripping with Nils Frahm was born.
“Fundamental Values” is a 14-minute odyssey into the clear, slow unfolding of Nils’ piano and electronica space. It’s blissful, intelligent and captivating, with the handheld footage bringing you right onto the stage.
He says: “It was about time to document my concerts in picture and sound, trying to freeze a moment of this period where my team and I were nomads, using any method of travel to play yet another show the next day. Maybe tonight is the night where everything works out perfectly and things fall into place?
“Normally things go wrong with concerts, but by combining our favorite moments of four performances, we were able to achieve what I was trying to do in these two years of touring: getting it right!
“When you hear the applause on the end of the film you should know that I was smiling happily, being a tad proud and feeling blessed to share these moments with you. Much love, Nils.”
Tripping with Nils Frahm is out now on digital download, CD, and 2xLP and may ordered from Erased Tapes, here; Bandcamp, here (which is a good idea if you’re reading this on the day of publication, it being Bandcamp Friday); or your trusted neighbourhood record retailer.
