A highlight of 2019 was Jon Gibson who goes under the pseudonym of Meltwater releasing his first EP – Digital Distractions. The North East electronic talent behind the project noise creator entitled Melt Water.
He uses samples and live instruments to create thoughtful intelligent compositions focusing on northern life and the hardships and joy of his life and those around him. A very much less is more when it comes to songwriting, it’s the intricate guitar lines and flying vocals that caught my attention.
Fake Blood starts the EP off sweetly with held synth notes and the main theme picked out on guitar. With Jon singing “You tell you story, but I don’t want to know about lies” over gentle chords and a simple drum beat.
Lines in the sand is as close to a proper song as you will get and standout track.
Horbury Junction is a song of two halves. Starts all jangly with delay effected chords before going almost dub step
West air is more electronic affair with an urban feel.
PM AM shows off his creative skills with electronic heavy tune. Skittered drums and backwards vocals. A more focused heavier beat brings in finger picked guitar chords before winding down to gentle keyboard.
