LLAWGNE is the musical guising mask of Mathias Engwall, an artist working out of Gothenburg with an ear for the heady rush of dreampop and shoegaze.
He’s learnt his trade over at the other side of the soundproof glass, producing, mixing and mastering – but he’s all set to release an album for US indie Declared Goods in the new year, entitled Nevereverie.
In an inversion of the album title, the first single he’s dropping from the release is “Reverie Neverending”; watch the video below, filmed around Mathias’ home town, which accompanies a lovely slice of ‘gazey pop with a little nod to Kevin Shields in those microtonal guitar bends. It bodes well for the album, for sure.
Mathias says of the song: “It’s about waking up one day and realizing you’ve been practically living in a daydream all your life.
“You discover that everyone around you has been living in the real world all along, and are miles ahead of you in their lives.
“In your romantic mind you were the protagonist of the movie, but in reality you didn’t even get cast in it. And, most importantly – there is no movie.
“I wanted to convey this with a kind of a mildly euphoric but also melancholic wall of sound – think Tom Petty and Deerhunter mixed with a classic Swedish indie vibe.”
