I’ve just been playing hide and seek with my little boy. If it weren’t for his constant giggling I’d get worried sometimes, as he seems to be able to think a little left of centre. Not for him behind the curtains or under the table – he managed to wedge himself behind the door of a wardrobe, and down behind my records.
Someone with a similarly skewed view, at least of music, is Bristolian Julio Bashmore. Making House music, but throwing in little splashes of his home cities tradition of trip-hop and bass music, Bashmore’s music is retro and forward looking, underground and mainstream, rich textures and minimal sounds. All this has led to classic sounds such as Au Seve, Husk, and Battle For Middle You.He’s back with a new single, Peppermint, out now on his own Boardwalk label, and taken from his debut album, out later in the year.
On this evidence, I’m not having Julio Bashmore round for a game of hide and seek. It’d take me hours to find him.
