TORCH-songtress Juanita Stein, who released her third album of rootsy songcraft for Nude, Snapshot, in late October, has released a video for the dark, rousing drama of “Reckoning” and announced a seven-date tour for May ’21.
The video, embedded down below, follows Juanita on a bike ride through southern France. It was self-filmed in the summer and proves an excellent visual complement to a tune of guitar twang, lofting vocals, high emotive effect, crashing rock ‘n’ roll chords; like the album, it was a work of melodic catharsis following her father’s death.
Juanita says it’s “… about the power of memory and grief. How the two go hand in hand. Certain images, smells and words can unlock the deepest or feelings.
“‘The silence, the empty halls, the cold machines’ is me recalling the antiseptic bubble we were in whilst visiting the hospital every day and the chorus is me releasing all of that. It’s an immensely cathartic tidal wave of angst and melody.
“The video was shot on a couple of iPhones in a small town in France called L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue during the warmer months. Myself, a bicycle and a heart full of sorrow.”
Juanita has also announced a short UK tour, beginning in June and concluding with a hometown gig in Brighton in the first week of June. It’ll be her first chance to take Snapshot on the road. The dates are as follows, click through on the venue hyperlink for tickets, which go on sale at 10am today.
