Following on from his recent ‘Beginning to Fade’ single, In Tall Buildings, aka Chicago songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Erik Hall, has just released a new video for its follow up, ‘Curtain’. Both are taken from his forthcoming album Akinetic, out on 2nd March via Western Vinyl. It’s a mix up of bubbling synth lines and snatches of guitars, over which Halls serene vocals claw at the wobbly melancholy of the melodies.
The accompanying video is directed by Rick Alverson, an American independent filmmaker known for his feature length films Entertainment and The Comedy, as well as music videos for the likes of Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, and Oneohtrix Point Never. “It’s all about the elevators,” explains Alverson of the video. “We tracked down an early 70s Otis in Richmond, VA, but the mirrors couldn’t beat the standard, flat-metallic glaze of the small generic we took back up to the ground floor from the basement of the old tobacco warehouse in Shockoe Bottom. It was small, but faces bent in a way that made you feel like someone lonesome, like someone was being born in the thick silver on the other side of the panel.”
