Hookworms are back with another track and video “Static Resistance”, from the forthcoming “Microshift” album. While the band say that “It’s a song about the wax and wane of depression and an eternal want to escape the life you’ve built.”, the toe-tapping beat and bright colours in the almost Parklife-esque video give the initial impression of a happy pop song…
But as the driving beat powers that organ hook through those space-age laser blasts, the hopefulness of the uplifting melody contrasts with the bleakness of some the lyrics. “I’m facing down, I’m feeling awful” the refrain repeats, ending in a chaotic crescendo while the video cuts between the minor day-to-day successes that we substitute for real meaningful, happiness (like eating a really good burger).
Watch the video below and simultaneously cheer yourself with the music while experiencing a nagging worry as to where your life is going –
The album Microshift is released on 2nd February on Domino
