Brighton based singer songwriter Holly Macve has revealed the video for “Be My Friend”. A blend of country dream-pop, complete with slide guitar, with Macve’s wistful delivery over the top. A little reminiscent of singers such as Neko Case or Caitlin Rose, it’s a late night saloon bar sound that somehow matches a sugar sweet vocal delivery with a threatening undercurrent of danger. I like to call it the “whiskey in your hand, knife in your back” sound.
Macve says this progression from her more traditional country sound is partially down to influences she has picked up while touring, “When I wrote the songs on Golden Eagle I had never toured, it was just me in my bedroom playing acoustic guitar. I then got the chance to tour the world with a band and sing with a symphony orchestra [with Mercury Rev in 2017]. My little world grew and I realised there was so much for me to learn about how I can use my skills as a singer and writer.”
This is the first track revealed from forthcoming album “Not The Girl”. That new album is out April 16th on Modern Sky. In the meantime, you can check out her last album, Golden Eagle, here.
