The pronunciation might be tricky but you can’t question the discerning taste of Belgian label Sdban Ultra in the nu-jazz, funk and grooves department. More proof comes with the label’s first taster from Black Flower’s soon-to-come ‘Magma’LP (due 28th January), ‘O Fogo’.
Four albums in and Black Flower have been steadily sharpening their kaleidoscopic blend of ethio-jazz, afrobeat, psychedelia and global rhythms, so much so that 2019’s ‘Future Flora’ set aficionados, Giles Peterson included, chattering. It’s a safe bet then that any new recordings from the five-piece will turn the heads of those in the know. As a first hint of what’s to come ‘O Fogo’ is set to raise that giddy anticipation further with its flighty flute melodicism, agile broken beats, deft organ stabs and dub-tinged electronica pauses. This is a fabulous fusion sound with its own identity – available from all the usual platforms…
Bring on January- Black Flower’s ‘Magma’ is set to lighten things up around here…
