Melbourne duo GL, aka Ella Thompson and Graeme Pogson, set tongues wagging with the release of their debut EP Love Hexagon via Plastic World last year, not just in their home country but much further afield, including right here in the UK where the Guardian jumped on them (not literally you understand) for their ‘New Band of the Week’ feature.
That attention is only set to increase with the release of their new single, Number One. Its a shimmering, bubbling piece of immediately gratifying synth-pop, with Thompson’s vocal alone a thing of real beauty. It’s filled with 90s references, and its littered with great pop lines and an impossible not to like chorus. The whole thing sits somewhere astride of Madonna and Swing Out Sister. Quite something.
