Father John Misty’s new video for “Josh Tillman and The Accidental Dose”, is a stellar exercise in storytelling. Marked by a grainy piano line and his signature warm baritone, the performance pulls you into its narrative with all the finesse of a high-end barrister delivering closing argument. The song feels both intimate and grand, with Misty’s ability to sell a story and a melody in equal measure in full effect throughout. Largely autobiographical – John Tillman is Mistys real name, you can’t help being drawn in by the narrative and it’s swaying, lounge like accompaniment
The video itself is essentially a live performance of the track, beautifully shot and brimming with shadows and suggestion. The interplay of light and darkness creates a moody, theatrical atmosphere underscores the song’s themes, while Misty’s charismatic presence commands attention without any overt theatrics.
Released alongside Misty’s sixth album Mahashmashana—out now via the ever brilliant Bella Union label, and which has already garnered rave reviews—the video serves as a perfect introduction to a record filled with deep, expansive tracks. With production credits from the Misty (Josh Tillman) himself, alongside Drew Erickson, and executive producer Jonathan Wilson, the album’s eight songs, including singles like “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All” and “Screamland”, promise a rich, 50-minute journey into Misty’s ever evolving artistry.
