We’ve already delved into Ezra Furman’s live videos, which were recorded over the course of a day at SPACE in Evanston in Illinois. He’s just released another one, a version of Driving down to L.A., performed for the first time in front of an attentive and exclusive audience, and taken from his forthcoming album Transangelic Exodus, out February 9th on Bella Union.
Starting out as something reminiscent of The Velvet Underground – stripped back, with glockenspiel taking the lead, but Furman soon drags things in a far more messy direction, as his vocal hits it gruff best and the guitars scream. As it continues, so the track flips between this messy scrambled affair and its VU-like Mr Hyde alter ego. It’s engaging stuff and Ezra Furmans performance is sparkling.
