Alongside the announcement of their album, I <3 Art to be released on October 20th (Bella Union), Norwegian five-piece Broen have shared their self-made visuals for latest single “You (Detective)”
Their second track from their debut LP, it’s all gorgeous twinkling synths, squelching bass and funky, cool as hell jazz drums with soulful vocals from Marianna Røe. It’s intelligent and dazzling stuff: dreamy melodies and a psychedelic hip-hop groove.
The clip was filmed by the group’s Heida Mobeck and Anja Lauvdal while on tour in the Netherlands, and features lots of extreme close ups to compliment the song’s meaning – it’s about “someone scrutinising the details of something rather than the big picture, about zooming in on something so much that you don’t understand how it all fits together.”
It’s got an arty DIY feel and the wobbly handheld closeups give a real intimate sincerity. It’s personal and joyful, just like the track and the trippy in/out focus matches perfectly the scratchy funk groove with its glints and washes of synth.
Broen is Røe on vocals, Lauvdal on synths, Heida Mobeck on tuba, Hans Hulbækmo on drums and Lars Ove Stene Fossheim on guitar.
They play London’s Barbican with Ezra Furman as part of the Bella Union 20th anniversary celebrations on 13 July, and then hit Latitude the day after.
