The Arctic Monkeys newly released single, ‘Four Out of Five,’ is as startling and captivating a listen as their sixth album – ‘Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino’ – from which it is taken. Alex Turner croons the opening lines like ‘Young Americans’ era Bowie covering ‘Happiness is a Warm Gun’ over a sinewy, claustrophobic rhythm section which shudders into a chorus as likely to afflict listeners with earworm as anything from their earlier records.
Directed by Ben Chappell and Aaron Brown and primarily shot on location at Castle Howard in the band’s home county of Yorkshire, the video for the song (which sees Alex Turner dressing as Nick Cave but playing Michael Corleone) does nothing to alleviate the aura of disorientation and ennui which pervades the entire song – watch below
