If you are looking for gothic atmosphere, dark waves of sound and focused experimentalism then Anna von Hausswolff is waiting for you. Last seen supporting Sunn O))) in full band mode, this singular artist is set to add yet another layer to her eclectic catalogue with the release of ‘All Thoughts Fly’ on 25th September via Southern Lord.
This time around Anna has stepped away from the song based monumental post-metal of her last record, 2018’s ‘Dead Magic’, to explore the sonic potential and compositional possibilities of a single instrument, a temperamental pipe organ in a Gothenberg church. It feels like an inspired choice by the artist. ‘All Thoughts Fly’ sets out to capture the melancholy, eerie beauty of Sacro Bosco, a 16th Century Italian garden that can still be visited today.
That connection between the music created and this mythological place reverberates through ‘Sacro Bosco’ the track released to announce the new album. Opening with the pipe organ’s steady breaths and throbbing bass pulse, around each corner there is surprise and invention. Sharp chords cry and wail then build to a grand soaring harmonic crescendo of cathedral proportions. It is a jaw-dropping introduction to an album that represents for Von Hauswolff ‘a very personal interpretation of a place that I lack the words to describe’. Judging by this preview ‘All Thoughts Fly’ will reach way beyond the personal, it is destined to intrigue for years to come….headphones on!
