99 Trees new video for ‘Broken’ is a transcendental, tropical treat. Albeit a smoother and more psychedelic sound, 99 Trees ‘vibe’ shares a familiarity with the summer soundtracks made of hits by Moloko, Bextor and Winehouse. The singers, not a firm of solicitors! 99 Trees Danish born vocalist Pia Blixen reveals that “the track is inspired by the last kiss before a relationship breaks” and the reverb soaked piano lead at the heart of the track echoes that sentiment.
Fellow band mate and producer Axel Concato adds that the song was written after watching “70s cult movie ‘Sweet Sweetback’ by Melvin Van Peebles” and the video, directed by Benoît Musereau, takes inspiration from the movie and the mountain on the cover artwork of forthcoming ‘21st Century’ EP from which ‘Broken’ is taken.
The Paris based pop duo’s 4 track Bleepmachine debut, is a silky smooth slice of synthy dream pop, layered with haunting harpsichord harmonies and sauced with a swagger inspired by 60’s/70’s Soul. A style that comes as no surprise considering the credentials of the team on additional production duties. ‘21st Century” was mixed by New York City’s Claudius Mittendorfer of Temples, Weezer, YAK fame and mastered by Swiss house music producer Chab, François Chabloz, in Paris.
The EP is due out on June 23rd and can be pre-ordered here.
