The Swedish PNKSLM label made a big impression on me at last year’s Liverpool PsychFest, with a number of acts wowing audiences and Sudakistan in particular causing quite a stir. Lucerne Raze is the moniker of PNKSLM founder Luke Reilly whose debut album, Stockholm One, came out to some critical acclaim earlier this year. Combining essentially garage music from different eras Lucern Raze is both the product of a long string of lo-fi bands over the years and a contemporary reflection of them.
Live, Reilly has put a band together who who are young, vital, energetic and chaotic. I am sure that they would be the first to admit that this was not one of the most polished performances at the festival, as Reilly request not to applaud their playing would suggest. Nevertheless, Lucern Raze are never short of entertaining with a vibrancy that is somehow in keeping with their antecedents in the garage music scene.
