‘Darts in the Dark’ is a bright and bubbling track that shines and radiates joy, yet a thread of melancholy gives it a bittersweet edge both in the lyrics and Australian singer Rachael Fahim‘s delicate yearning vocals. We are pleased to be able to provide an exclusive look at the video accompanying this piece of pop masterclass that is touched with a golden country burnish.
The song celebrates resilience in the face of life’s many challenges – frustrations likened to throwing darts in the dark – and with the anthemic chorus, glorious harmonies and a chiming acoustic bedrock, this track hits the mark.
The video we are premiering today, directed by Ben Develin and Benjamin Ling of Mude Media (Milan Ring, Taka Perry, A.GIRL), captures the exuberance of the song. It is a deceptively simple performance piece set against a stark background of a working port with containers stacked high that provides a contrast to Fahim’s magnetic and poised delivery and a band that exudes a sense of camaraderie and joy. The natural light adds a lustre but it is the Fahim and her band that shines. Fahim says of the video:
…we went into this video just wanting to create something fun that gave a sense of the energy you would get from one of my live shows. After being away from the stage for two years, I’ve spent a lot of time with my band working on building a live show that was festival ready and hoping that audiences will connect with that.
It’s always such a joy to watch a band enjoying themselves as they do in this clip: this is an immersive and mesmerising video to watch:
Pure pop perfection.
Rachael co-wrote ‘Darts in the Dark’ during the 2021 ‘Country Meets Pop’ song camp with producer Robby De Sa, Ned Philpott and US writer Rosi Golan (Little Big Town, Billy Currington, Christina Aguilera). Fahim recounts:
When we wrote this song, I was talking about how I often feel stuck while everyone around me seems to be moving forward, life can be a rollercoaster, but you just have to sit back, enjoy the ride and just focus on your own path. Rosi had this amazing title, and the song just flowed; we literally had a finished production six hours later!
