Washington D.C. experimental artist Tristan Welch has returned with a new single Asset / Defect, out tomorrow and taken from the cd of the same name and we’re delighted to premiere it today on Backseat Mafia.
Welch specialises in creating soundscapes using electric guitars and effects, and has active since the early 2000’s, his outlook being to “give art the respect it deserves”. Asset / Defect is a piece based on his accounting of sorts, a result from tallying up the ledger of negative character defects and positive assets.
That conflict between (essentially) good and bad plays out in the music as the harmonies appear at once lights and turn dark at points. Strings and electornic hue bleed into eachother, as small melodic fragments play out in repetitative fashion, eventually overlapping and weaving in and out of each other. It’s not just interesting, but beautiful as well.
