Taken from his forthcoming album Lay It Bare, out on March 5th via Boden Kuma Recordings, Release is the new single from The Record Summer, aka songwriter Bret Rodysill, and we’re delighted to be able to premiere the video right here on Backseat Mafia today.
it’s been a tough road to this point for Rodysill. It’s ten years since his acclaimed debut EP, five since a couple of singles for London’s Loose Narrative label. Since then he’s rare, intense, nervous system disorder, mental illness, and hospitalization that have robbed him of virtually a decade.
Now he’s back though, healthy, glad to be alive and, before its cancellation due to COVID, was scheduled to be a keynote speaker at SXSW 2020. Of ‘Release’, Bret told us “‘Release’ is about catharsis. The past few years, spending a lot of time in hospitals and in bed, I got to a place where things were so bottled up that I needed to let go of protecting myself. I needed to release all that bad energy. ‘Release’ is meant to promote just that—letting it all go.”
Release is warm, hazy synth/indie pop, with glittering synths and electronics cascading over Rodysills vocal. Although there’s just a hint of melancholy in the tune, it’s forward looking, hopeful and crucially impossibly catchy. If Tears for Fears were backing Rumours era Fleetwood Mac at some points you might say. Resistance is impossible.
