Toward the end of last year, the John Beckmann-fronted New York band The Mortal Prophets released their debut album Me and the Devil, and you would have expected them to slow down a little bit after that but that isn’t the case at all. Just a month later, Beckmann released a solo piano record, which isn’t what some would expect from him but it’s already been established the man contains multitudes. He seems to be on a serious creative streak because there’s already a new Mortal Prophets record on the way.
The caveat is it’s mostly made up of covers, i.e. the exact opposite approach taken to the debut. There’s a bunch of blues classics in there that you generally don’t touch unless you want to do something radically different with them, and Beckmann’s quite interested in the unconventional. Three original songs complete the set, and to coincide with the announcement today, we’re premiering the title track via a Michele Civeta-directed video, which offers an intriguing glimpse into the world of Deeley Plaza Blues, out on Friday July 28th. Tune in below.
