No Such Thing is a new venture out of that there north of England, founded by Dirty Freud and Ruby Tingle, who between them that over 20 years at the musical coal face. They’ve set an ambitious target of 70% releases to come from LGBTQ+ and Black and Minority ethnic artists. They’re kicking of the label with a new track, Rose-Tinted by Szou and we’re delighted to be able to premiere it right here on Backseat Mafia today.
The Manchester based singer-songwriter says of the new release “I wrote ‘Rose-Tinted’ in the summer of 2020 when it became apparent that the pandemic was here to stay. Being away from my friends made me appreciate them even more and long for the days when life was normal. It’s a love letter to them really. It’s about looking through old photos and the intense nostalgia feeling you get from that. It’s about wanting to relive those memories, the good and even the bad because it was such a different time to the present day. That sounds bleak but I’m hopeful we’ll be able to make even better memories when all of this shit is over.”
Nodding its head towards Christine and the Queens territory, Rose-Tinted bubbles and swoons, anxious rising synth lines replaced initially by hazy chords and then stabbing figures. As it flowers, so all the lines intertwine. Over the top, Szou packs wraps the melody up in this frankly gorgeous breathy soul.
