South London trio Ski Lift are gearing up for the release of their new single ‘Portal’, out tomorrow (12th March) and the follow up to their 2019 debut ‘Comfortable Here’, and we’re delighted to premiere it right here on Backseat Mafia today.

Built around Welsh singer songwriter Benji Tranter, the band is completed by Alisa Tully on bass and drummer Jovis Lane. Of the track, Tranter says It’s a love song to nature, but also a peacemaking process with my new hometown of Croydon – having grown up in the beautiful countryside of the welsh border, I have always found the transition between city and country to be a strange and bewildering thing to experience. But I have learned over the years that you can find vibrant energy in the fields and forests, and peace and solitude in the midst of a bustling city, if you look for it.”

For confirmed cardigan wearers such as myself (on occasion), this is absolutely perfect pop. Teenage Fanclub riffs and the sort of to die for harmonised choruses and singalong to your hearts content hook that just provide the shot in the arm everyone needs right now blast through with these irresistible sugarspun melodies to the fore. And for non-cardigan wearers (ie most people), it’s still perfect pop.
