Well, this is a welcome surprise – not even a year since their last album, Ottawa’s Pony Girl are already back with news of a follow-up. Following October’s Enny One Wil Love You, you’d have expected the duo to take some time off, but it’s two albums on the trot for Pascol Huot and Yolande Laroche – we suppose they’re making up for the seven-year gap in releases that followed 2015’s Foreign Life.
The title track, and lead single, from their fourth album is premiering below – a riposte to the culture surrounding the working week. Per the band: “‘Laff It Off’ is air to the grind’s fire, a balloon lift above and beyond the 9-to-5. It’s brushing off the heaviness of labour and floating on through a pseudo-Talking Heads chorus that’s so simple yet true. We first wrote, “I don’t wanna be working every day,” as a lark, but ultimately fell for it as a chant to get through the next shift.”
Heads up: the video has a slightly distressing last 40 seconds or thereabouts, and claustrophobics should go stream it on Bandcamp instead. Laff It Off arrives on Friday October 27th via Paper Bag Records.
