Glaswegian bedroom pop star Peter Cat is gearing up to the release of his new EP The Magnus, and from it he’s today released visuals to one of the EP’s stand out tracks, Melon Dating Simulator, and we’re delighted to be able to premiere it right here on Backseat Mafia today.
Based on the Steam game Superstorm Melon Date, in which the player romances a melon-human hybrid in a dystopian future, the track is every bit as odd and left field as you might imagine lyrically, but its wrapped up in this gloriously wonky hue, with warm guitars and bass, alongside a liberal splash of harmony vocals and engaging synth lines to give us this frankly impossibly catchy slice of indie/alt-pop, with his vocal and delivery (as well as some of the brilliant musical turns and weaves) owing something at least to Neil Hannon and the Divine Comedy, which is never a bad thing.
The accompanying video is as gorgeously peculiar as you’d expect. Check it out, here
