New outfit Night Crickets may have gone undermyour radar, but they boast a couple of famous faces in former Bauhaus and Love and Rockets man David J, alongside Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes) and multi-instrumentalist Darwin Meiners. Their debut album A Free Society came out earlier in the year via Omnivore Recordings, and now they’ve released a new video for the track The Unreliable Narrator, and we’re delighted to be able to premiere it right here on Backseat Mafia today.
Of the track, David told us “The Unreliable Narrator’ is descriptive of the all too pervasive distorted punditry that pollutes the media these days. Based on wild conspiracy theories and half truths rooted in bigotry, it is an affront to true journalism and rational thinking. Night Crickets calling it out”.
The track features a guest appearance by acclaimed British actor, Marc Warren, a long time friend of David J. After receiving an unrelated text message from Marc during the sessions, David asked if he would record the words, ‘the unreliable narrator’ on his phone. Marc obliged & forwarded three attempts, all of which can be heard on the finished recording.
Mixing up the eastern with psychedelic and goth elements, The Unreliable Narrator has this slightly anxious feel, as these piano figures and repeated basslines draw you in before, throwing you gently off kilter by running away from the beats. It’s dark and motorik and, maybe surprisingly, beautiful.
