We are honoured to bring you first listen to the new single ‘Firewall’ from instrumentalist Garagee (the work of Rob McPherson) and featuring the vocals of Jane MacArthur. Garagee has worked in the past with Steve Kilbey (The Church) and is about to release the album ‘Garageee III’
‘Firewall’ starts with the most delicate harmonics and expressive instrumentation – soft, dappling and immersive with many subtle layers tweaking delicately and alluringly at the ears in the distance – a most satisfying wash of sound. MacArthur’s vocals add a hypnotic effect on top – velvet and reflective, inflected with a thread of yearning and melancholia. The result is something that is redolent of Beth Hirsch’s contribution to the sonic landscapes of Air: a perfect marriage of voices and electronica.
The immersive, contemplative nature of the song is complimented by the accompanying video – a monochrome portrayal of a couple in another era: slightly surreal, disconnected and alien.
This is beautiful evocative music with a dreamy hypnotic effect. ‘Firewall’ is out tomorrow (Friday, 19 July 2024) and is available to pre-order here.
Of the artwork, McPherson says:
I wanted the artwork to reference Jane’s exploration of humanity at an atomic level by utilizing binary language, which I equate to being a kind of technological DNA sequencing.
The track is the first taste of Garagee’s forthcoming album ‘Garagee III’. McPherson says of the album:
With this album, I called on the likes of Steve Kilbey, Jane McArthur, Lindsay Phillips, and Pink Tights, amongst others, who brought profound lyrical insight and expression, where each track had been written to serve the unique aesthetic and timbre of each singer… The album runs intentionally like an eclectic and personalized mixtape sent to someone you recently had a long and invigorating existential discussion with at a party.
The album, ‘Garagee III’, will launch at Mama Chen’s (Footscray) on Saturday, August 24.
