Here’s another album for you to keep an ear out for next month: the debut album from New Jersey’s Charlie & Margot. The project is not made up of two people, it’s important to note; it’s a solo project from Matteo DeBenedetti, named after the two dogs belonging to him and his wife. A very cute detail, but the subject matter of his new single is more serious than that. DeBenedetti’s been in bands before and let’s just say that the life of DIY touring musicians isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sooner or later, you get burned. ‘sleeping’ is about this specifically.
Per DeBenedetti: “[This song’s] written about facing up to the idea that sometimes putting your trust in other people can ultimately end up being a bad thing for you, and sometimes it’s best to take matters into your own hands. In this instance, it’s very specifically regarding being a musician, being involved with other people as a touring musician (as a grown adult) at a DIY level, and navigating all the nuances that come with that.”
It’s got a lovely alt-country twang to it, which is to say you’ll be very into this if you’re also looking forward to the new Ruston Kelly or Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit records. ‘sleeping’ premieres below, taken from Charlie & Margot’s debut Joyride, out Friday April 7th.
