Premiere: Mark Stevens releases the beautifully wistful Santa Fe

Peterborough based folk singer Mark Stevens is on the verge of releasing his first ever EP, Rodeo, out on Laundry Rooms on January 21st, and from it we’re delighted to premiere the song Santa Fe right here on Backseat Mafia today.

We spoke to Mark about the track and he told us “In terms of writing the record, the theme came first I suppose.
Santa Fe was just one of many stops on a Route 66 trip a few years ago and I just fell in love with the place. Also known as ‘The City Different’ the culture and the people of Santa Fe really resonated with me and we had some great experiences whilst there: Horse riding, countless tequilas and even an immersive art experience.  Having wrote the song a couple of years down the line my lyrics came from my memories of the place and the feelings I have when I look at our photographs.”

Rolling melodies and sweet harmonies abound in Santa Fe, as it wends its pastoral way forward, touching as it does on on moments of Americana but always sounding essentially from this side of the pond. Stripped back percussion adds this lolloping pulse as it makes a play for you heart, telling tales of a trips and experiences, gently but persuasively pulling you along with it.
