‘Always Kinda Late’ from Meanjin/Brisbane-based indie-rock act Left Cassette is a thoroughly satisfying blast of Brit-pop influenced indie rock that shimmers with its anthemic delivery. There are traces of fellow compatriots DMAs and, internationally, Kings of Leon in the sparkling guitar riffs and scaling choruses, a passionate and euphoric track resulting in an indelible pop song touched with a little melancholy.
The shimmering, dappling guitars add to the driving pace, adding a lustre of gold to the track that has pulse-quickening pace.
UK-born singer/guitarist Josh Aldred talks about the inspiration behind the track:
It’s a song about heartbreak, I wrote it about an ex-partner. We were both from the UK and while visiting family back home, our holiday ended in a way I didn’t expect. She decided to stay in the UK longer, and that was the moment we knew we were better off going our separate ways. It wasn’t an easy thing to process in the moment, the song came together months later when I was in a better headspace. The line, ‘If you gone, promise you’ll remember me,’ really sums up that feeling of wanting to leave a lasting mark, even when things don’t work out.
Ultimately this is something exciting and thrilling from the creative hotspot that is Meanjin/Brisbane:
‘Always Kinda Late’ is out tomorrow (Friday, 21 February) and will be available to download and stream here.
