following on from the release of his new album Dose, which dropped last Friday via Cornelius Chapel Records, Jaco (aka Jake Waitzman) has released a new video for the track ‘In the Sea’, and we’re delighted to premiere it right here on Backseat Mafia today.
Of the song, Jake says “This song started with me humming the beginning part and then recording it into Evernote. The words have to do with trying to pinpoint meaning and then trying to convey that to anyone else. If the words are a little abstract, maybe that reflects a perceived inability to explain anything to anyone (including oneself), or to know or be known. And then there’s having that feeling of repetition mixed in. The mood of the track is not supposed to be all hopelessness- maybe awe mixed in there, too. This might be the most laid back, spacey-sounding track I’ve done yet.”
The Birmingham singer-songwriter pulls together elements of power pop and indie rock on the track, which has something of the Pavement/Teenage Fanclub about it, with its slacker vocals, killer tunes, and that rare mix of uplifting and melancholy that purveys the whole thing. Synths bleed into these brushes of guitar and pulsating drums as it moves into wistful, blissed out psychedelia.
Have a listen and take in the watery, similarly blissed out video, here
