Premiere: J. Chambers releases the brilliant Sirens feat. Dei.3avu

Taken from his forthcoming EP ‘Escape the Kingdom’, a work concerned with being Black and British and out on 26th, ‘Sirens’ is the new single from Manchester poet and hip-hop artist J Chambers, and we’re delighted to be able to premiere it right here on Backseat Mafia today.

Already a rising star on the scene, J Chambers found success in 2020 with politically charged ‘Kill the Noise’, written in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. As a consequence, J found himself commissioned to write and perform spoken word poetry to open up Blue Peter’s Black History Month celebration.

Built on a reggae backing, with the talents of Dei.3avu in abundance over the chorus, there’s a steely edge to Sirens, as Chambers lays bars and rhymes down that highlight his sharp insight and keenly observed take on the way black people are treated in Britain today, as well as their culture and standing. Underneath, there’s echoey, dubby backing, with guitars and brass pointing the way, pushed along with fizzing, sprawling beats.

File under future classic.
