Taken from his new album Appendix, out now on Reckless Yes records, we’re delighted to premiere the video from Grawl!x, aka Derby-based multi-instrumentalist and filmmaker James Machin. Taken from the concluding part of his trilogy on grief, Appendix b isn’t maudlin, more forward looking, with hope creeping into the melancholy. Stark piano’s begin the track, referencing the likes of Max RIchter and Nils Frahm, before a bout of lush pop breaks out, with these wispy and ethereal vocals (provided by Haiku Salut) sighing and cajoling, added to by percussion and these aching strings. Simply put, it’s beautiful.
The accompanying video sees Machin himself waking through a tunnel, sympolic maybe as he leaves the camera and walks into the light at the end. and it was filmed not too far from us here in Sheffield at the rather lovely Monsal Trail.
