Premiere: George Bloomfield reveals the hazy jazz-funk of Why Didn’t You?

Leeds singer-songwriter George Bloomfield is gearing up for the release of his debut EP ‘Why Didn’t You?’ on May 7th, and ahead of it he’s releasing the title track from it, which we’re delighted to be able to premiere on Backseat Mafia today.

On recording the EP, George explains “As the pandemic continually hindered my opportunity to get into a recording studio, I decided to embrace a more DIY approach to creating the record at home. I write in a similar way to an electronic producer by continually adding loops and textures but using only live instruments, and the freedom of working from home gave me the possibility to create as many layers as I wanted with no restrictions.

Drawing from the likes of Unknown Mortal OrchestraL, Khruangbin and the the like, Bloomfield makes music that has this almost sepia tinged jazz-funk about it. Why Didn’t You is a hazy but memorably melodic tracks, with Bloomfields vocal and these soaring guitar lines weaving in and out of one another, while over the changes trumpets and saxophones mark things out – sometimes trading stax like markers for something more improvised. Beautifully melancholy.
