We are very honoured to premiere the new single ‘Sanctuary’ from the talented Western Australian (via New Zealand) troubadour Damien Binder: a firm favourite here at the antipodean headquarters of Backseat Mafia. And what a pleasure it is to hear his dulcet tones once more. It’s a follow up to his earlier 2024 single ‘Crazy’ and heralds a forthcoming EP.
‘Sanctuary’ confirms Binder’s songwriting prowess: his ability to capture sonic wonder and the sunlit brilliance of his adopted home. There is always something ambulatory about his writing: restless, always moving, animated and expressive. The gentle acoustic strum serves Binder’s velvet vocals, yearning and filled with a burning and intense nostalgia.
Binder describes the song as being about a place of safety and comfort amidst the turbulence of the world, a much needed salve in our current turbulent times, and his voice is like a unguent that soothes the ears and calms the soul. There is a discernible Don Henley/Bruce Springsteen beauty in the delivery, firmly grounded in an antipodean flavour redolent of The Apartments or The Go-Betweens.
‘Sanctuary’ is out tomorrow (27 September) and can be downloaded and streamed via all the usual places and through the link below.
Binder will be launching the new single on Friday, 5 October in Perth – tickets available here and details below.
