You probably shouldn’t eat Bloody Bananas. Or beetroots for that matter. However, Cary LaScala’s needed a little extra time for his solo career under that name to ripen and now it’s ready to be picked. We’re all out of fruit metaphors so that means we can move on to the music. A Bay Area transplant, he now resides in Los Angeles and is warming up for a very busy year.
For one thing, his debut single is out tomorrow, taken from a debut EP whose release seems to be imminent, at least in relative terms. For another, there’s a debut album coming later this year, which should tell you how long he’s been working on this solo artist thing. Primarily a touring drummer until now, he’s flexed his multi-instrumentalist muscles on the no-bullshit indie rock cut ‘Can’t Be For Real’.
LaScala is figuring things out as he goes along. “I’ve just always had the itch to do my own thing. I think I have a lot to say, and I’m always coming up with different song ideas. […] It’s strange to consider myself as a multi-instrumentalist… I’m self-taught on drums, guitar, bass, and as a vocalist, but don’t claim to know what I’m doing or anything.” In spite of that admission, his first offering as Bloody Bananas is very promising, and we’re premiering it below – tune in (it’s a TV visualiser, get it?) and keep your eyes peeled for more from the project soon.
