Lackadaisies are a sort of Brisbane indie supergroup and we are very pleased to premiere their new single ‘Payphone Text’, a charming, shambling and joyful sonic ride. Consisting of Nathan Kearney (Camping, Nathan John Kearney), Grace Pashley (Full Power Happy Hour) and Marnie Vaughn (Married Man, No DOZ), Lackadaisies have a breadth of experience which positively shines through in this laid back, louche indie pop gem. It has a playful, plonking, driving vibe and sense of humour that, combined, reminds me of The Flaming Lips.
SInger Kearney says of the track:
…the title is inspired by an ex-partner who sent me a payphone text one time when they were away. I thought it was romantic; mainly because it would’ve taken ages to punch into the dialpad.
It’s fun to play, danceable and not very serious. I love bands like The Slits and Raincoats and this song feels like it sits comfortably among those acts.
The result is a jaunty stroll in the sunlight with just a touch of dappling shade in the melancholy vocals:
This is delightful stuff that captures that particular – dare I say lackadaisical? – Queensland style flowing through the genes that begun in bands like The Go-Betweens and The Apartments. Out tomorrow through Zang! Records, it will be available through all the usual download/streaming sites.
You can catch Lackadaisies launching the single at The Triffid in Brisbane on 4 June – details below.
