From a tale of love and resilience, Backseat Mafia is excited to premiere Australian folk artist Alana Wilkinson as she introduces her latest single, ‘Dream Big’. Alana’s heartfelt composition, born out of her challenges after the 2021 birth of her son, Rafferty, weaves together the trials of navigating NICU corridors, surviving a dramatic flood evacuation, and a year of relying on home oxygen. The culmination of these experiences is a beautiful acoustic rendition that truly captures the essence of a mother’s love.
The song’s genesis unfolded in the midst of adversity as Alana found inspiration in the NICU at The Mater Mother’s Hospital. With newborn Raffy nestled on her chest, Alana penned the uplifting lyrics that form the backbone of ‘Dream Big’. The result is a contemporary lullaby that not only reflects Alana’s unwavering positivity but also resonates with fellow parents who might share a similar journey.
Alana shares, “Raffy was born extremely prematurely at 24 weeks and put up a big fight for 92 days in the hospital until he was finally big and strong enough to come home. Throughout the terrifying experience, I found solace in daydreaming of our future together; wishing on birthday cakes, singing to the trees, and exploring the beauty and chaos of the world waiting just beyond the hospital window.“
The beauty of the song lies not only in its poignant lyrics but also in the mesmerizing acoustic arrangement that accompanies Alana’s stunning voice. Captured live in the studio, mixed by Paul Ruske, and mastered by George Georgiadis at Little Wing Sound, the single captures the essence of a modern folk lullaby, creating a whole-hearted experience that tugs at the heartstrings. The emotional depth and universal resonance found in Wilkinson’s music, which showcase a myriad of insightful visionaries and stories, aptly encapsulate the human condition like nothing else.
‘Dream Big’ has already garnered acclaim, receiving the prestigious Roddy Read Songwriting Award in November 2023, ahead of its official launch. The single mirrors the dreamy atmosphere characteristic of Alana’s live shows, where her voice seamlessly navigates through narratives of love, motherhood, and the whimsical essence of the human spirit. ‘Dream Big’ is set to be released tomorrow Wednesday, January 24, via Gyrostream and is a sneak peek into Wilkinson’s upcoming debut LP.
Despite the current challenges of balancing a busy touring schedule with the responsibilities of full-time motherhood, Alana’s artistry continues to shine. The recent crowd sing-along at the Illawarra Folk Festival is a testament to the enchanting spell her music casts on listeners. Her captivating performances have earned her acclaim at prominent festivals such as Woodford, Queenscliff, Blue Mountains, Nannup, and Port Fairy. Additionally, sold-out headline shows and shared stages with esteemed artists like Daryl Braithwaite, Tim Freedman, Fanny Lumsden, Clare Bowditch, The Pierce Brothers, and Kav Temperley.
As ‘Dream Big’ takes centre stage, Alana Wilkinson, with her soulful voice and delightful storytelling, continues to solidify her place as a captivating and influential figure in Australian folk music. Her journey in the coming months promises to be an exciting one, accompanying Ryan Young during the Festival of Small Halls in January, supporting Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks in February and March, and gracing the stage at the upcoming Nannup Music Festival.
