When two guitar legends combine, sparks fly. Or at least that’s what we’ve gleaned from listening to this brand new track, One Sky, from American fusion legend Al Di Meola and former slinger for 70’s prog-poppers Pooh Battaglia. It’s out today on 7” vinyl and streaming and we’re delighted to be premiering it this morning right here on Backseat Mafia.
Of the collaboration, Al says “ Dodi and myself act as a kind of natural bridge between our different styles with the six strings and we have created ‘One Sky’, a disparate fusion of disciplines miles away from each other but united by the same love for music and the liberating power that it can express.”
The result is a masterclass in guitar playing, both electric and acoustic, as the pop rock sound of Dodi Battaglia and the world jazz influences of Al Di Meola, trade and mingle over this sort of Euro beat slice of theatrical pop. As well as fitting more notes per bar than can almost be comprehended, the pair have cooked up a damn fine tune, with some glorious operatic pop vocals over the top.
