Indie-folk singer-songwriter Will Knox has released his highly anticipated fourth album ‘English Silence’. A collection of beautifully constructed, introspective collection, the track boasts 11 soundscapes of wonderful, warming organic textures and some beautifully crafted alternative-folk soundscapes.
Known for his candid, emotionally raw songwriting, Knox has garnered comparisons to artists like Elliott Smith, Bear’s Den, Villagers, Nick Mulvey, and Passenger. Recorded in London with renowned producer Ian Grimble (Bear’s Den, Daughter, and Axel Flovent), ‘English Silence’ delicately balances intimate themes—coming-of-age, fatherhood, and healing—against a backdrop of lush acoustic guitars, harmonies, and understated percussion. The result is an evocative sonic journey, one that offers listeners a space of comfort and reflection.
Knox describes the personal journey that inspired the album: “I started writing English Silence during lockdown, having learned I was going to become a father for the first time. That time allowed me to confront a lot of issues from my past, and I was determined not to pass on any of my own issues to my child.” Through online therapy and heart-to-heart conversations with loved ones, Knox embarked on a process of healing and self-discovery. “A lot of unsaid things were said,” he shares. “I realized how difficult I find it to communicate my feelings in the real world, perhaps explaining what has always drawn me to songwriting.”
This reflective process is captured most poignantly in the album’s focus track, “Body Talk.” Co-written with Belgian artist Emma Bale, the song explores the nuances of non-verbal communication—how physical cues and body language can convey emotions when words fall short. “In the past, I’ve often been too nervous, scared, or excited to tell someone how I felt,” Knox explains, “instead relying on physical hints & interactions to communicate.” An acoustic version of “Body Talk,” featuring Dutch singer-songwriter néomí, will be released in October, giving listeners a stripped-back rendition of the emotionally charged track.
The overarching themes of healing and self-growth are woven throughout English Silence. Album opener ‘Instant Coffee’ reassures listeners that healing takes time and cannot be rushed, while tracks like ‘Leave The Light On’ and ‘Twentysomething’ grapple with the struggles of communication and self-identity. ‘Growing Pains’, a conversation between Knox and his inner child, highlights the album’s exploration of fatherhood and the delicate act of reparenting oneself while becoming a parent.
In addition to his solo work, Knox has built an impressive reputation as a songwriter and producer, earning accolades including five Buma Awards and an ASCAP Award. His songwriting credits span a diverse range of international artists, including Duncan Laurence, Sevdaliza, néomí, and Dotan, with his collaborative works amassing over 1 billion streams.
English Silence captures a wonderful sense of fragility, vulnerability, and a radiant ability to deliver honest, heartfelt songwriting. Beautiful textural instrumentation and poetic, melancholic songwriting that brings warming some breathtaking moments and relatable emotion.
