‘Strawberries’, the new single from the iconic The Go-Betweens songwriter Robert Forster, features his trademark insouciance and his witty wry delivery, augmented by his wife Karin Bäumler’s vocals. Pondering the moral and ethical ramifications of greedily consuming the last strawberry in the bowl, Forster’s tone is light and playful, cheeky and jaunty in this little missive with more bounce than a beach ball.
The accompanying video feature the couple in a bucolic setting filled with dappling light and a cheeky louche delivery straight to camera: full of the inherent charm that Forster and his wife have:
The track is off Forster’s forthcoming ninth solo album of the same title, due out through Tapete Records on 23 May 2025.
While the single is an amusing personal tale, the new album reassumes Forster’s delightful ability to inhabit strange and varied fictional characters. He says:
The last album was very personaI. I didn’t write anything for about a year after I’d finished ‘She’s a Fighter’ for the last album. And then I just started to write songs that were something a little bit else. They just came naturally. I didn’t really have a theme, it was just sort of lighter, a situation a little bit outside of myself. And I thought that was good. That was a place I could go to.
