Beloved Berlin-based Irish artist Wallis Bird and legendary punk rockers The Undertones are announced as the acts to take to the Bulmers Live stage at Leopardstown this July 13th and 20th, respectively. They’re joining the already-announced headliners Wild Youth (June 8th), buskers-turned-stadium-fillers Keywest (June 15th) and legendary DJ Mark McCabe (June 22nd).
Berlin-based Wallis Bird is one of Ireland’s most vital and best-loved artists, known for her rousing performances and the emotive, raw songwriting skills that have won her fans the world over. She has released seven albums since 2007, for which she’s won two Meteor Awards and a prestigious 2017 German “Musikautorenpreis” (Music Author Prize), not to mention two further nominations for the Choice Music Prize. In addition, she’s racked up over a thousand shows during the past decade, earning a reputation worldwide for passionate, energetic, good-humoured concerts.
The Undertones emerged from Derry in 1976, the result of five friends (John O’Neill, Damian O’Neill, Feargal Sharkey, Billy Doherty and Michael Bradley) learning how to play basic rock and roll. Practicing in their bedrooms eventually led to the band recording John O’Neill’s ‘Teenage Kicks’ in 1978 on Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations label in Belfast. The Undertones signed with Sire Records and ‘Teenage Kicks’ was re-released, resulting in the band’s first appearance on Top Of The Pops. They also recorded four highly acclaimed LPs. In 1999 The Undertones reconvened, without Feargal Sharkey, to once again perform their two-minute, three and a half chord songs to a new generation of fans in Derry. Fellow Derryman Paul McLoone replaced Sharkey on vocals and his vocal prowess and electric onstage presence soon convinced any doubters that he was more than capable of doing the job.
