News: Torpedoes Illuminate Dark Realities with ‘Heaven’s Light Our Guide’

Portsmouth-based post-punk/goth band Torpedoes returns with their fourth album, Heaven’s Light Our Guide, slated for release on the 5th of July. Born out of the turbulent years of Covid-19 and its chaotic aftermath, this album serves as a critical lens on our shared world, articulated through the poignant lyricism of principal songwriter Ray (Razor) Fagan, formerly of Red Letter Day.

Following their previous works – The Gong Show (2007), Dark Times (2011), and Black Museum (2018) – Heaven’s Light Our Guide marks a significant evolution in Torpedoes’ sound. While maintaining their signature post-punk/goth edge, the band introduces a stronger emphasis on keyboards, blending them seamlessly with their characteristic spiky guitar riffs. The result is a soundscape that recalls the raw energy of Killing Joke, the dark romanticism of The Cure, and the eclectic ambition of Muse and The Cardiacs, yet remains distinctly Torpedoes.

The album opens with a commanding presence, immediately pulling listeners into its richly layered world. Each track is meticulously crafted, with J D Callender of Cranes at the helm of recording, producing, and mixing at Portsmouth’s Studio One28. The production is indulgent and expansive, allowing the intricate keyboard arrangements to shine without overshadowing the angular post-punk foundation.

The album follows the release of its lead single ‘Tomorrow’s Mine’ which epitomises the band’s unique style and offers listeners a glimpse of things to come from ‘Heaven’s Light Our Guide’.

To celebrate the release of the album the Torpedoes will be playing at the Spice of Life in London on the 5th of July and Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth on the 20th of July.
