News: The Youth Play Return With Gritty New Single ‘If We Just Ever Were’

After making a striking debut last year, The Youth Play is back with their highly anticipated new single, If We Just Ever Were. This release marks a bold evolution in their sound, blending gritty guitar tones with a driving bass line, high-octane and dynamic riffs that create a beautiful kaleidoscope of 90s infused post-punk.

Opening with it’s tight, high energy beat, the track quickly introduces a Joy Devision-esque guitar line before bursting in with a reverb heavy, haunting lead guitar riff and bassline to compliment the energy of the drums. The vocals break through the soundscape with a spoken-word delivery over the now stripped bass and drums before eventually crescendoing into an explosive chant.

Atmospheric and explosive, the track balances it’s vibrant ethereal shoegaze influenced guitars with a buzzing sense of joyous energy and angsty commentary.

Talking about the single, The Youth Play explains: “If We Just Ever Were is a song that was written alongside the tracks of the previous Wildflowers EP. The first ideas came about when we felt the need to write a fun, simple song that embraced the feeling of simplicity. The lyrics delve into the lack of excitement in everyday situations, aiming to amplify the euphoria and catharsis from freeing oneself from societal expectations and just enjoying the moment.”
