A REALLY sad loss to the world of early Nineties British independent guitar music this evening, as news began to circulate on Facebook that David Fitzgerald, the original guitarist with Burton-on-Trent’s psych-noise genii The Telescopes, has died.
In a statement on Facebook, Wrong Way Records posted: “Haven’t posted of here for quite a while, but unfortunately I bring some devastating news 🙁David Fitzgerald of Junkyard Liberty and former and original guitarist in The Telescopes has sadly passed away.
“He was a close friend and awesome musician, and I’m holding back the tears as I try to pen this post.
“When I chatted to Stephen (Lawrie) at the Fuzz Club Festival he said David needs to make some more noise, I agreed, sadly it will never happen.
“The World seems a whole lot smaller today, RIP David and you will always be remembered a thanks for the music, memories and 2 awesome New Year’s Eves.”
The NME later published a statement from The Telescopes’ singer, Stephen Lawrie, saying that David had been suffering from cancer.
We can think of no finer way to salute a fantastic noise guitarist than to pause, reflect, and glory in “To Kill A Slow Girl Walking.” RIP David; your guitar cut deliciously deep.
