News: The shimmering dream pop of Julia Why? returns with news of signing to Blossom Rot Records, an album on the way and an aperitif in the form of single ‘Deep Fake’

Julia Why?, formerly the solo work of Julia Wylie who is now joined by Kat Harley (Mezko, The Laurels) on guitar and Frank Salt on drums, makes a welcome return to the sonic dream pop soundscapes of the southern hemisphere. Julia Why? today announced their signing to the boutique Blossom Rot Records ahead of a new album ‘dust suspended on a sunbeam’ due for release in March 2025. And to give us a delectable early taste of what’s to come, the new single ‘Deep Fake’ is out today.

‘Deep Fake’ is a shimmering dreamy track, highlighted by crystalline guitars that dapple like sunlight through leaves, and Wylie’s velvet vocals, distant and slightly Antarctic in the delivery. A chorus sweeps through majestically through the firmament. It’s a shoegaze-infused ethereal delight and a tongue-in-cheek look at the addictive and vampiric soul-sucking feeling that social media instills in all of its users.

The track comes with an absolutely charming video made by guitarist Kay Harley featuring a very cute stalking pooch, Wylie’s own good dog Hazel. Wylie says:

During recording we were all cackling with laughter imagining my dog Hazel as a “super fan” social media creep that spends their days stalking the band on Instagram. And voila – a star was born.

I’m assuming Hazel will have her own Instagram page and stalkers soon:

‘Deep Fake’ can be downloaded and streamed here and through the link below.

‘dust suspended on a sunbeam’ can be pre-ordered through the link below and you can catch Julie Why? live with a single launch on 10 October at Enmore’s Trocadero Room (details and tickets here).
